Technology in Terrorism
Where terrorism is concerned, technology has significantly improved communications and access to information. Technology has had minor impact on the kind of weapons used as terrorists do not need sophisticated weaponry to execute attacks; relatively low-level technologies can be used to inflict disproportionate harm, examples being suicide bombings and shootings. It is the Internet and mobile phone-related technologies that have truly enhanced terrorists’ capabilities. These innovations have enabled terrorists to communicate with each other and to a global audience, as well as to gather intelligence and access information for planning and coordinating attacks.
